Podcast:Unbiased Science Published On: Wed Mar 15 2023 Description: On this week's episode of the pod, we tackle a fad diet that's getting a lot of attention these days: the carnivore diet! We kick things off with the "rules" of the diet and all the foods that are restricted (i.e., all plant foods). We discuss the flawed premise of the diet (that Homo sapiens were carnivores who only resorted to plant-eating during times of animal food scarcity). Next, we discuss that meat is an excellent source of certain nutrients, but how it is not a good source of fiber, vitamin C, or vitamin E, and the importance of a well-balanced diet. We discuss some of the short and long-term risks of the carnivore diet, with a focus on the impacts of low-fiber and high-fat consumption. We then talk about the environmental impacts of meat-eating and ways to choose more sustainable options. We chat about some high-profile proponents of the carnivore diet, and do a deep dive on some low-quality research that's used to support their claims. You don't want to miss this one!
