Therapy and Theology
Therapy and Theology

Have you ever looked at a situation you’re facing in utter disbelief and thought, "How will I ever get over this?" Lysa TerKeurst understands. After years of heartbreak and emotional trauma, she realized it’s not about just getting over hard circumstances but learning how to work through what she has walked through. Now, she wants to help you do the same. That’s why Lysa teamed up with her personal, licensed professional counselor, Jim Cress, alongside the Director of Theological Research at Proverbs 31 Ministries, Dr. Joel Muddamalle, to bring you "Therapy & Theology." While Lysa, Jim and Joel do tackle some really hard topics, you’ll soon find they're just three friends having a great conversation and learning from each other along the way.

When you have experienced heartbreak or betrayal, it’s hard not to fall into thought spirals. Can I trust this person? This is a big question, especially after a betrayal has occurred. The deeper the wound, the longer the repair will take. But not all repairs are equal. You see, there is a difference between wise trust and blind trust. Of course, there is space for grace in relationships, but it shouldn’t be sloppy grace where deceptions and dysfunctions are glossed over.In this episode, Lysa, Jim and Joel will help you see that rebuilding trust requires a combination of three crucial things.Related Resources:We'd like to thank the American Association of Christian Counselors for partnering with us to sponsor Season 7 of Therapy & Theology. It can be so disillusioning to process things that are breaking our heart, especially when it seems like God is not intervening. Maybe you find yourself asking questions like: When is God going to right the wrongs and bring justice to this situation? How am I supposed to believe the Lord is good in light of this? How can I trust God when the person who hurt me got away with it?In this episode, Lysa, Jim and Joel will meet you in these questions and help you begin to see that faith in God means being assured of His goodness even when what He allows doesn't feel good, seem good or look good right now.Related Resources:We'd like to thank the American Association of Christian Counselors for partnering with us to sponsor Season 7 of Therapy & Theology. Betrayal can come in so many different forms. Maybe a friend tells a secret you trusted them with. Or maybe your spouse is making decisions that are breaking your heart. Or maybe a co-worker threw you under the bus. Underneath it all, if you're honest, you feel betrayed by God: Why didn't He step in? This episode will help you begin to realize that the trauma of having your trust broken by people you thought would never betray you may be life-altering but it doesn’t have to be life-ruining.Related Resources:We'd like to thank the American Association of Christian Counselors for partnering with us to sponsor Season 7 of Therapy & Theology. Trust is the oxygen of all human relationships. But it's also what trips you up after you've been burned.Maybe a friend constantly lets you down. A leader or organization you respect turns out to be different from what they portray themselves to be. A spouse cheats on you. A family member betrays you. You're becoming exhausted by other people's choices and starting to question your own discernment. And you're wondering, If God let this happen, can He even be trusted?Lysa TerKeurst understands. That's why she wrote her new book, I Want to Trust You, but I Don’t, which is setting the tone for an entire season of conversations about trust on Therapy & Theology.Through each episode, Lysa, Jim and Joel will give you the scriptural and therapeutic wisdom you need to feel safe enough to connect deeply with people who are trustworthy, process the doubts you have about God, and find the courage to walk into the future full of hope and possibility.Episode 1 drops on September 19, 2024 ... Our words frame our reality. The words we use are strong indicators of our personal emotional health, the health of our relationships, and whether or not we will go the distance with those relationships. By carefully watching our words, we can see relational differences as growth opportunities that bring us together instead of tearing us apart.Colossians 4:6 (NIV) says, “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” This same verse is paraphrased in The Message Bible like this: “Be gracious in your speech. The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out.” In this episode of Therapy & Theology, Lysa TerKeurst, Dr. Joel Muddamalle and licensed counselor Jim Cress discuss the framework needed for any healthy conversation. After listening to this conversation, you will be equipped to …Discover the framework for healthy conversations by learning words to avoid and better scripts to use.Discern when to have important conversations without the other person shutting down or getting defensive.Make progress with points of contention in your relationship that you’ve previously felt stuck in knowing how to resolve.Helpful Links: Want more wisdom as you navigate hard relationship dynamics? If you want to become a doctor, you go to medical school. If you want to become a lawyer, you go to law school. But the truth is, no one sends us to school to become emotionally mature. However, if we want our relationships to be healthy and fruitful, emotional maturity is actually a key component we must be committed to work on continually in our lives.  Simply put, emotional maturity is emotional sobriety. It is living in such a way that our emotions are not swept up in traumas, triggers, coping mechanisms, addictions and more. In this episode of Therapy & Theology, Lysa TerKeurst; her personal, licensed professional counselor, Jim Cress; and Proverbs 31 Ministries Director of Theological Research Dr. Joel Muddamalle talk about the signs, symptoms and cures for emotional immaturity and how we can “Be alert and of sober mind” (1 Peter 5:8) to really experience the fulfillment found in healthy relationships, secured in emotional maturity.  After listening to this episode, you will be equipped to:Apply healthy coping mechanisms in your reactions and responses when your emotions get hijacked by past or present trauma.Learn the secret to experiencing the peace of Christ every single day by clothing yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.Embrace the freeing truth and encouragement that a journey of growing in emotional maturity is not marked by perfection but by progress.Friend, we pray this conversation blesses you with encouragement and practical wisdom wherever you are in your journey today!Helpful Links:Want more wisdom as you navigate hard relationship dynamics? Operate in self-awareness, owning your stuff and taking responsibility for your actions without saying “but you …” and blaming. Express empathy. Admit your mistakes and confess them. Steer clear of judgment. Practice and enforce healthy boundaries. Seek first to understand before you’re understood; say, “Help me understand …”
When our earthly experiences with love have left us feeling unprotected, uncertain and ultimately unloved, it’s tempting not to want to risk trusting anyone again. And all too often, our view of love and God’s love for us is tainted by the people who have failed us. But God doesn’t want us to stay stuck in our places of hurt. He wants to heal us and help us move forward so we can experience not only the depth of His love for us but also the power of life-giving, healthy relationships with other people, fostered in an environment of authentic love both given and received. In this episode of Therapy & Theology, Lysa TerKeurst; her personal, licensed professional counselor, Jim Cress; and Proverbs 31 Ministries Director of Theological Research Dr. Joel Muddamalle tackle some of the most important questions surrounding love and our motivations behind love, including:How can you love the Lord with your heart, soul and mind? How can you really love your neighbor as yourself? What is motivating your love? And what is that motivation revealing?Where is what you love ultimately leading you?How would you define love? After this conversation, you will be equipped to:Understand what biblical love is, and what it isn’t, by discerning the difference between kindness and enabling.Know what to do if you feel stuck in an unhealthy relationship, and learn the safest outlets you can take your most important questions to, including trusted friends, a pastor or a Christian counselor.Like Jim Cress says, “true love connects and communes.” So, friend, we pray this conversation leaves you feeling more loved by God and more equipped to pursue healthy, loving relationships with others.Helpful Links:Want more wisdom as you navigate hard relationship dynamics? All of us have facts that make up the stories of who we are. But we’re not just the sum total of these facts. There’s also the impact from these facts, which lives with us beyond the occurrence of the devastation, abuse or pain that happened to us. And in the middle of that impact, chances are there are some Shame Scripts holding us hostage from living in the freedom God so desires for us.A Shame Script can simply be defined as a faulty belief or perception of self, others and/or God. Shame Scripts back us into isolation, making us imprisoned by lies, like … You are unwanted. You are an inconvenience. No one really cares about you.If you’re not performing or achieving something, you don’t have value. You’re just not good enough.
