In today’s episode, Lisa and Laura sit down to continue their conversation with their dear friend, JoAnn Crouse. (If you haven’t heard JoAnn’s incredible story, be sure to go back and listen to episode 30.) JoAnn dives deeper into her story and talks about the stuff so many of us struggle with but are too ashamed to bring to the light: things like what happens to your identity when you find yourself suddenly single and what true forgiveness requires. Time spent listening to JoAnn is never wasted time. Her open heart and vulnerability are gifts. So go on and grab a cup of coffee and settle in; you will be grateful you did. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Ephesians 1:4–5: In love, (God) destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ. Invite Him in with this episode’s questions for reflection. On today’s final episode of Ordering Your Priorities, Lisa and Laura discuss Talk 2: To the Heights. Notice that in this study and discussion we didn’t give a time management system to help you get every single priority done all the time. Why? Because we can’t get it all done! There will always be more expected of us than we are able to give, but now, we’ve hopefully got some new principles that we can apply to all sorts of different situations, ensuring that in the end, our time is given where it matters most. So grab your coffee and your study guide, and let’s dive in! Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Colossians 3:2: Set your minds on things that are above. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. 1 Timothy 5:6: For she that liveth in pleasures, is dead while she is living (Douay-Rheims). In today’s episode, Lisa and Laura discuss Lesson 7 of Ordering Your Priorities, Priority 6: The World Outside. After we have given attention to God, our heart, our spouse, our kids, and our homes, we are left with all those other priorities: people and commitments. For some of us, prioritizing is easy, but for others, not so much. Do you struggle with people-pleasing, setting boundaries, or maintaining a healthy work-life rhythm? If so, there is a way to cultivate a heart and home saturated with the peace that comes from ordering your priorities.  Open your Heart to our key Scripture. 2 Corinthians 5:20: So we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. In today’s episode, Lisa and Laura discuss Lesson 6 of Ordering Your Priorities, Priority 5: Your Home. Home means something different to each of us, but as Lisa and Laura dive into today’s priority, one thing is clear: we all ache for a place to call home. In the words of Maya Angelou, “The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.” Today’s conversation dives into more than wraparound porches and fresh flowers on the kitchen island. It’s about the feeling we all long to create. So get cozy, friends; put on some coffee, grab a cozy blanket, click play, and make yourself at home. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. All the more reason to grab some coffee and settle in…this truly is a conversation you don’t want to miss. On today’s episode, Lisa and Laura sit down with their husbands—Leo Brenninkmeyer and Nick Phelps—to continue the discussion on Lesson 4 of Ordering Your Priorities, Priority 3: Your Marriage. Hear what the men in their lives have to say about marriage, as the couples dive right into topics like faith, suffering, the five love languages, and more. Today is a special day for Walking with Purpose. It's the Feast Day of Saint Therese of Lisieux, our patron saint! And at WWP, we are all about getting women into Scripture so they can encounter Christ personally and apply it to their everyday lives. This is why St. Therese is our perfect guide: she spent countless hours studying Scripture and sharing a simple way for us to experience God’s Word that is personal and transforming. Today on the podcast, Laura Phelps honors the Little Flower as she shares three not-so-typical reasons why she loves Saint Therese and calls her a friend.  Open your Heart to our key Scripture.  2 Corinthians 12:9–11: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am weak, then I am strong. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Proverbs 9:4: Whosoever is a little one, let him come to me. (Douay-Rheims) Matthew 11:28–30: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Jeremiah 17:7: Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. Joshua 1:9: Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Psalm 116:6: The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. Invite Him in with this episode’s questions for reflection. What character trait do you believe disqualifies you from becoming a great saint?  Does the idea of being little and depending on God frighten you? What staircase are you trying to climb alone? Do you write letters? Maybe today is a good day to start. Show mentions. Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ Pope Pius VII, “She rediscovered the Gospel itself, the very heart of the Gospel.” St. Therese of Lisieux, The Story of a Soul Michael E. In today’s episode, Lisa and Laura dive into Lesson 4 of Ordering Your Priorities, Priority 3: Your Marriage. This is a big one, friends, so we will give you a special, bonus episode on marriage next week. Acknowledging that marriage takes work—it can be wonderful and painful—Lisa and Laura set out to remind us that we should never lose hope. With God, anything can happen. Miracles can happen. God doesn’t just part things like the Red Sea. He brings things back together. We pray this conversation offers you peace and hope wherever you are. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Genesis 2:24: Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.  Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Isaiah 59:1: The hand of the Lord is not too short to save. John 12:24: Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Ephesians 4:26–27: Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil. Invite Him in with this episode’s questions for reflection. What suffering in your marriage are you making worse by refusing to accept it? Look at the pain in your marriage and ask yourself, “What virtue might the Lord be inviting me to grow in?” Show mentions. Dan and Stephanie Burke, Divine Intimacy Retreat Flourish: The Art of Being Human. Register here. In today’s episode, Lisa and Laura dive into lesson 3 of Ordering Your Priorities, Priority 2: Your Heart. Most of us live as if our hearts aren’t a priority. We tend to put other people’s hearts before our own, believing that’s what a good woman is supposed to do. But guess what? We matter to God. Our wild and beautiful hearts are the most essential parts of us, and if we don’t tend to them properly, we run the risk of becoming physically, mentally, and spiritually spent. Are you ready to build the good life by prioritizing your heart? Well, then…grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and click play! Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Psalm 56:9: My wanderings you have noted; are my tears not stored in your flask, recorded in your book? Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Philippians 2:2–4: Do nothing out of selfishness or conceit but in humility count others better than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Matthew 16:25: Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Jeremiah 31:3: I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. 1 Samuel 16:7: The Lord sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. Isaiah 43:4: You are precious in my eyes and honored, and I love you. Psalm 4:8: In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Invite Him in with this episode’s questions for reflection. What form of self-care do you turn to instead of inviting the Lord to heal your heart? What are you trying to get through that is meant for you to grow through? Show mentions. CCC 2563: The heart is the dwelling-place where I am, where I live…The heart is our hidden center, beyond the grasp of our reason and of others; only the Spirit of God can fathom the human heart and know it fully. In today’s episode, Lisa and Laura dive into Lesson 2 of Ordering Your Priorities, Priority 1: Your Relationship with God. If we desire to live lives of purpose, happiness, and fulfillment, we have got to get this priority right! Why? Because only God knows what will make us happy and what we most long for. But let’s be honest: it can be hard to trust God. When we have experienced hurt or abandonment, putting God first doesn’t come easily. If this is your struggle, join Lisa and Laura in this powerful conversation and discover how a personal relationship with God changes everything for the better. Open your Heart to our key Scripture.  Psalm 91:1–4: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and the deadly pestilence; he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode.  Sirach 51:2: You have been my protector and helper, and have delivered my body from destruction, and from the snare of a slanderous tongue, from lips that utter lies. Deuteronomy 32:10–12: He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that flutters over its young, spreading out its wings, catching them, bearing them on its pinions, the Lord alone did lead him. Ecclesiasticus 51:31: Draw near to me, ye unlearned, and gather yourselves into the house of discipline. (Douay-Rheims) Psalm 5:3: O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I plead my case for you and watch. Psalm 143:8: Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning, for in thee I put my trust. Invite Him in with this episode’s questions for reflection. St. Josemaría Escrivá said, “Conquer yourself each day from the very first moment, getting up on the dot, at a fixed time, without yielding a single minute to laziness. If, with God's help, you conquer yourself, you will be well ahead for the rest of the day. It's so discouraging to find oneself beaten at the first skirmish... “The heroic minute. It is the time fixed for getting up. Without hesitation: a supernatural reflection and… up! The heroic minute: here you have a mortification that strengthens your will and does no harm to your body.”  What lie plays in your mind that says this is impossible for you to do? What could you change in your nighttime routine in order to faithfully give God the first part of your day? Show mentions. Henri Nouwen, Finding My Way Home: Pathways to Life and the Spirit. The start of a new season and school year allows us to reboot. Even if we no longer have kids in school, it’s a chance to turn a page in the calendar and start fresh. But let’s be honest…it can also be incredibly overwhelming. This is why Ordering Your Priorities is the perfect study for this time of year. Join Lisa and Laura as they walk us through Ordering Your Priorities, an eight-week Walking with Purpose Bible study. Here’s the truth: not all things are urgent, and some good things can remain undone. If the thought of not getting it all done makes your heart race, this series is for you! In today’s episode, Lisa and Laura discuss Lesson 1, Talk 1: Building the Good Life, setting the stage for the weeks ahead. Tune in now, and let’s start building the good life together! Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Matthew 7:24–27: Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Psalm 33:11: The plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations. (NIV) Psalm 32:8: I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Luke 11:28: Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it. Luke 14:28–30: For which of you, deciding to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, “This man began to build, and was not able to finish.” Jeremiah 6:16: Thus says the Lord, “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.” 2 Corinthians 4:18: Because we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. Invite Him in with this episode’s questions for reflection. In which relationship are you feeling the scrape of the chisel? Are you feeling tempted to pull back and isolate? Invite God to reveal to you if this is actually an opportunity to grow more like Him. Show mentions. St. John Paull II. Man cannot live without love. He remains a being that is incomprehensible for himself, his life is senseless, if love is not revealed to him, if he does not encounter love, if he does not experience it and make it his own, if he does not participate intimately in it. This, as has already been said, is why Christ the Redeemer “fully reveals man to himself.” Flourish: The Art of Being Human. Register here. Benjamin Windle, Digital Church in a Lonely World. We all carry brokenness, personality quirks and the ability to make choices that hurt others. However, the potential pain of being in community is not simply an unwanted by-product; it is a key part of the purpose of community. It is the very fact that community costs us something that makes it valuable. Beth Moore: If we only choose to be around those who require virtually nothing hard from us, what will prompt us to change? God often uses others as the chisel to carve true integrity into our rough personalities. A chisel that never scrapes the stone is useless. Join us for Lesson 6 in our six-week summer series based on our Living in the Father’s Love Bible study, Loving Like Him Through Forgiveness. Lisa and Laura are firm believers that no matter the situation, forgiveness is crucial to living in freedom. The truth is, when we struggle to forgive, we are the ones who suffer. If you are in a place where the pain is too much, and you do feel like you haven’t any control over the way to respond, this episode is for you. Grab your study guide and get ready to jump into a new perspective on forgiveness. Freedom, sweet friend, is waiting for you. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Matthew 10:8: Freely you have received, freely give. (ERV) Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Matthew 10:8: Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils: freely have you received, freely give. (ERV) Ephesians 2:8: For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. Isaiah 53:7,9: He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth. Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth…And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Invite Him in with this episode’s question for reflection. There are three indications of having truly forgiven a person: 1. Not dwelling on the incident. 2. Not bringing up the incident again and using it against the person. 3. Not talking to others about the incident. Which of these aspects of forgiveness do you find most difficult? Show mentions. Join us for Lesson 5 in our six-week summer series based on our Living in the Father’s Love Bible study, How Do I Work at Forgiving Myself and Others? Forgiveness is such an important topic that we devote two lessons to it: the Bible study lesson and the talk that follows. One of the reasons we think it matters so much is because lack of forgiveness hits us on every level physically, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually. Lisa and Laura know that talking about forgiveness is tender territory, because when forgiveness is needed, something serious has happened. But they also understand how crucial it is to forgive. Why? Well, grab your Bible (and definitely a pen and paper because you will want to take notes) and find out! Open your Heart to our key Scripture.  Matthew 7:1–5: Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, “Let me take the speck out of your eye,” when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Matthew 4:17: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Luke 23:34: Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do. Join us for Lesson 4 in our six-week summer series based on our Living in the Father’s Love Bible study. Today Lisa and Laura discuss the question: how does God define beauty? We know the right answer; it’s about what’s on the inside, right? But exactly what on the inside makes a woman beautiful? What makes you feel beautiful? Everyone’s experience of beauty can be different, but one thing is for sure: beauty is good. We are moved by beauty. It stirs the soul and is most often how God draws us to Him. So grab a cool drink and settle in for a beautiful episode! Open your Heart to our key Scripture. 2 Corinthians 4:16–17: Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. Think of a woman in your life who is beautiful because of how she has loved. How have you experienced her beauty? Join us for Lesson 2 in our six-week summer series based on our Living in the Father’s Love Bible study. Today, Lisa and Laura talk about God’s boundless love for us, while acknowledging that for many, our experience of father has fallen way short. When our earthly fathers disappoint us, it can be hard to trust God. But there is good news—no matter what, we can all find our way back to Abba, Father! As we study this lesson together, we hold hearts gently and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us. So grab your study guide, grab a friend, and let’s discover the truth about our Father. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also; henceforth you know him and have seen him.” Romans 8:15: For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, “Abba, Father!” Invite Him in with this episode’s reflection. Today, Lisa and Laura introduce us to our third piece of armor, the shoes of the gospel of peace. As we study peace in the whole of Ephesians, we start to see that there are two types of peace. And we need both. What are these two types of peace, you ask? Grab your Bible and get ready, because you are about to find out! Open your Heart to our key Scripture. For he is our peace, who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility. Ephesians 2:17–18: [Jesus] preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. John 14:6: I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by me. Philippians 4:6–7: Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Isaiah 26:3–4: You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock. Invite Him in with this episode’s questions for reflection. Who is someone you know who has inner peace despite being in the midst of difficult circumstances?  Consider calling and asking him or her how this has been possible. How has he or she activated peace? If you do this, you’ll probably learn something new and encourage this person at the same time.  Show mentions. What sort of detriments has it brought to your life? What would be the first step you could take this week to make a different choice? Show mentions. E. Stanley Jones, theologian. The four kinds of righteousness are performative righteousness, comparative righteousness, infused righteousness, and practical righteousness. CCC 1814: Faith is the theological virtue by which we believe in God and believe all that he has said and revealed to us. CCC 539: The evangelists indicate the salvific meaning of this mysterious event: Jesus is the new Adam who remained faithful just where the first Adam had given in to temptation. Jesus fulfills Israel's vocation perfectly: in contrast to those who had once provoked God during forty years in the desert, Christ reveals himself as God's Servant, totally obedient to the divine will. In this, Jesus is the devil's conqueror: he "binds the strong man" to take back his plunder. Jesus' victory over the tempter in the desert anticipates victory at the Passion, the supreme act of obedience of his filial love for the Father. Priscilla Shirer, writer. Let’s stay connected. Join us for Episode 9 in our seven-week series, The Psalms of Ascent: A Lenten Pilgrimage. The word translated “ascent” means “to go up.” It gives an idea of being on a journey, moving to a higher place spiritually. In this week's episode, Lisa and Laura dive into Psalm 124 and explore Scripture’s response when help doesn’t seem to come. Trials in life are inevitable, but what if, instead of falling into despair, we choose to see them from a new perspective? Join Lisa and Laura as they set our hearts on pilgrimage, unpacking today’s Psalm and applying it to our daily lives.    Open your Heart to our key Scripture.  Psalm 124:1-8: Thanksgiving For Israel’s Deliverance. A Song of Ascents. If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, let Israel now say— If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us up alive,  when their anger was kindled against us; then the flood would have swept us away,  the torrent would have gone over us;  then over us would have gone the raging waters. Blessed be the Lord,  who has not given us as prey to their teeth! We have escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped! Episode 8 kicks off our brand new, seven-week series, The Psalms of Ascent: A Lenten Pilgrimage. The word translated “ascent” means “to go up.” It gives an idea of being on a journey, moving to a higher place spiritually. In this week's episode, Lisa and Laura dive into Psalm 121 and explore Scripture’s response to when everything feels out of control. If you aren’t convinced of God’s protection or struggle to believe in His promises, you are in the right place. A Song of Ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved, he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and for evermore.   Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode.  Luke 1:28: The Lord is with you! Join us for our final episode in our seven-week series, Encountering Jesus Personally. In this week's episode, Lisa and Laura dive into the Gospel of John, focusing on the famous I AM statement, “I am the true vine.” Each time we find Jesus saying, “I am,” He is giving us a glimpse into what He’s like. He’s revealing something about His character. Do you want to attach yourself to Jesus, but struggle with self-reliance? Do you long for Him to heal your wounds, but only under the condition that it won’t hurt? Oh, sister, have we got a show for you! Grab your coffee, open your Bible, and join Lisa and Laura as they unpack today’s Scripture and apply it to our daily lives. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. John 15:1: I am the true vine. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. John 15:1-5: I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. Psalm 80:8-19: Thou didst bring a vine out of Egypt; thou didst drive out the nations and plant it. Thou didst clear the ground for it; it took deep root and filled the land. The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches; it sent out its branches to the sea, and its shoots to the River. Why then hast thou broken down its walls, so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit? The boar from the forest ravages it, and all that move in the field feed on it. Turn again, O God of hosts! Look down from heaven, and see; have regard for this vine, the stock which thy right hand planted. They have burned it with fire, they have cut it down; may they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance! But let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, the son of man whom thou hast made strong for thyself! Then we will never turn back from thee; give us life, and we will call on thy name! Restore us, O Lord God of hosts! Let thy face shine, that we may be saved! Isaiah 5:1-2: Let me sing for my beloved a love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. He digged it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; and he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. Jeremiah 2:21: I planted you in the land like a special vine of the very best stock. Why in the world have you turned into something like a wild vine that produces rotten, foul-smelling grapes? (NET) Ephesians 4:1: Lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called. Hebrews 4:12-13: For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, or joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him, no creature is hidden, but all are open and laid bare to the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Hebrews 4:14-16: Since then have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sinning. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. John 15:3: You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you. Ephesians 5:26: That He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word. 1 Peter 5:10: And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, establish, and strengthen you. Invite Him in with this episode’s questions for reflection. Have you experienced God’s Word moving in your life, revealing motives, thoughts, and hurts? How have you responded? What difference would it make if you truly believed the words of Saint Julian of Norwich: “When God sees sin, He sees pain in us”? Show mentions. Join us for Episode 6 in our seven-week series, Encountering Jesus Personally. In this week's episode, Lisa and Laura dive into the Gospel of John, focusing on the famous I AM statement, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” Each time we find Jesus saying, “I am,” He is giving us a glimpse into what He’s like. He’s revealing something about His character. If you have ever asked, “What should I do?” “What can I know?” or “What can I hope for?” this conversation is for you. Join Lisa and Laura as they unpack today’s Scripture and apply it to our daily lives.   Open your Heart to our key Scripture. John 14:6: I am the way, and the truth, and the life.   Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. John 14:1-6: “Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.” Deuteronomy 5:32: You shall walk in all the way which the Lord your God has commanded you. (ESV) Isaiah 30:21: Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. Isaiah 35:8: The prophet says, “a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way, the unclean shall not pass over it.” Jeremiah 6:16: Thus says the Lord, “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask the ancient paths where the good way is, and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.” John 13:15: For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. John 14:9: He who has seen me has seen the Father. Hebrews 1:3: (Jesus) is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature. (ESV) Luke 15:19-20: “I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your  hired servants.” And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. Isaiah 43:1: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name: you are mine.   Invite Him in with this episode’s questions for reflection. Jesus is the way: In what situation is Jesus asking me, right now, to follow His example? Jesus is the truth: What is a concrete way I can learn a new truth about Jesus this week? Jesus is the life: What am I hoping for?   Show mentions. John Bartunek, The Better Part: A Christ-Centered Resource for Personal Prayer    “From ancient times philosophers have summed up the human condition as a quest to answer three fundamental queries: What should I do? What can I know? What can I hope for? Jesus Christ answers them all, not merely with doctrine, but with his very person.  ‘I am the way’ can translate into: What should you do? Follow me! Do what I have done.  ‘I am the truth’ means: What can you know? You can know everything, if only you know me. Knowing me, you know the truth; you know the secret behind the workings of the whole universe and the yearnings of the human heart.  ‘I am the life’ means: What can you hope for? In me, through me, you can hope for and expect the fullness of life that you long for, even though you may not be able to put that longing into words.  “Christ is truly the living water that quenches every thirst. He is truly the light that scatters every kind of darkness. The quest of every man and woman to satisfy the heart’s deepest needs is the quest to seek his face, and it leads either to Christ and the place he has prepared for us in heaven or to a dead end.” (John Bartunek, The Better Part: A Christ-Centered Resource for Personal Prayer. Hamden, CT: Circle Press, 2007, 936.)   “Unfortunately, sin has obscured our capacity to know and follow the light of truth, and indeed, as the Apostle Paul realized, it has exchanged ‘the truth about God for a lie,’ (Romans 1:25). By the Incarnation, the Word of God came to bring full light to man. In this regard, the Second Vatican Council says that it is ‘only in the mystery of the Word made flesh that the mystery of man truly becomes clear.’” (Saint John Paul II, Christ Reveals Man to Himself)   Get your Isaiah 43:1 free printable. Join us for Episode 5 in our seven-week series, Encountering Jesus Personally. In this week's episode, Lisa and Laura dive into the Gospel of John, focusing on the famous I AM statement, “I am the resurrection and the life.” Each time we find Jesus saying, “I am,” He is giving us a glimpse into what He’s like. He’s revealing something about His character. Are you grieving the death of a loved one? How about the death of a hope, dream, or relationship? Do you believe that Jesus has power over death and will bring all things back to life?  This conversation is one you do not want to miss. Join Lisa and Laura as they unpack today’s Scripture and apply it to our daily lives.   Open your Heart to our key Scripture.  John 11:25: I am the resurrection and the life.   Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode.  John 11:25-26: I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.  John 11:4-6: But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness is not unto death; it is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by means of it.” Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that he was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. John 11:14-15: “Lazarus is dead; and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”  John 11:19: Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. John 11:20-26: When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary sat in the house. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. And even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” John 17:1-2: Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. Ephesians 2:1-5: And you he made alive, when you were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience. Among these we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of body and mind, and so we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved). 2 Peter 3:8: But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. Revelation 21:4: He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more.   Invite Him in with this episode’s questions for reflection. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hireling and not a shepherd, whose own life the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hireling and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me, as the Father knows me and I know the Father, and I lay down my life for the sheep.  Isaiah 61:2-3: To comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. John 9:39: Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind.” John 10:7–10: Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not heed them. I am the door; if any one enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. He’s revealing something about His character.  If you’re struggling to find purpose and meaning or are weary from disappointment or heartache, listen and be encouraged as Lisa and Laura unpack today’s Scripture and apply it to our daily lives.   Open your Heart to our key Scripture.  John 6:35: Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.”   Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode.  Exodus 3:14: God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” John 6:15: Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the hills by himself. John 6:26–27: And when Jesus encountered the crowd He said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you.”  John 6:48–51: He said, “I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread he will live for ever, and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.”   CCC 129 says, "The New Testament lies hidden in the Old and the Old Testament is unveiled in the New.”   Invite Him in with this episode’s questions for reflection. What’s the end goal? Is psychological health the end goal or is it spiritual maturity?    Show mentions. Fulton J.
