Got to spend an electrifying afternoon with the Detroit legend himself at his exhibition at MOCA. What a journey! AXx “Detroit-based techno DJ and producer Carl Craig’s immersive environment, Party/After-Party is a visceral sound and somatic experience that evolves with each new iteration. Drawing on Craig’s 30-year career as an internationally touring DJ, Party/After-Party guides visitors sonically through a club night from the perspective of the DJ. Starting in those moments before the crowd arrives and the DJ spins alone, before reaching its crescendo with the party’s pulsing apex, and finally slipping towards the melancholic embrace of the after-party, the work evokes the collective ecstasy and desolation found only on a club dance floor”@carlcraignet@moca Ep 84 // CARL CRAIG https://linktr.ee/areweonair  https://areweonair.com/carl-craig https://www.instagram.com/areweonair/ https://www.instagram.com/armannafeei/

As her voice rises and falls through rhythmic intonations, ISABELLA ROSSELINI takes ARMAN through what it was like to grow up in the spotlight and forge her own path. Not only a famed ACTRESS, AUTHOR, FILMMAKER. MODEL, and SINGER, but also an ECOLOGIST and ANIMAL BEHAVIOURIST, ROSSELINI meets us where she is most comfortable: her Bellport, New York farm. This magical place, she says, brings her ‘closer to the earth center.’ Distinguishing her hens by the sound and pitch of their clucking, and her roosters by the way they COCK-A-DOODLE-DO, her attention to detail thrives and grows as part of the farm. Crossing language barriers with and bringing together for the first time a partnership that would change cinema soundtracks forever, ROSSELLINI elaborates on working with DAVID LYNCH and ANGELO BADALAMENTI. Taking us backstage of her legendary singing of BLUE VELVET, a smile breaks across her face. Throughout the interview, it’s as if ROSELLINI travels in time to each moment she’s describing to Arman. To share this hour with ROSSELINI is pure joy and peace. A perfect way to close out SEASON 3.  In her own words - “Once you have confidence, you become much more daring.” In this spirit, we turn the page to SEASON 4. www.areweonair.com/isabella-rossellini www.instagram.com/areweonair/ www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
A trailblazer at the INTERSECTION OF THE WORLDS of art, fashion, sports, and music, to name a few - DANIEL ARSHAM makes moves that shake the very foundation, push the perceptions of, and bridge the gaps within pop culture. From growing up in MIAMI to the steady beat of THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G., in 1994 - the height of the hip hop moment, to later moving to New York City and launching a hyper successful art career, ARSHAM has premiered as many show openings as he has had creative titles. Being named the first ever creative director in the NBA for the Cleveland CAVALEIRS, Arsham’ core identity is unfazed by trends, but lives at the zeitgeist of THE NOW. He’s always working, but when he’s in his studio there’s never a moment without music. Reminiscing on being a kid enthralled by A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, his propensity for visual STIMULATION, ACUITY, and MEMORY runs deep. An artist through and through, he recalls unpeeling the plastic and revealing the handpainted green, black and red colors of MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS. ARMAN and ARSHAM spend the afternoon in LONDON, overlooking the city and diving into everything from the impact and INGENUITY VIRGIL ABLOH inspired in everyone around him, to ARSHAMS own future ambitions. This episode is not one to miss. www.areweonair.com/daniel-arsham www.instagram.com/areweonair/ www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
This week, ARMAN is graced in Milan, Italy by not one but TWO close friends and COMPLIMENTARY POWERHOUSES, GILDA AMBROSIO AND GIORGIA TORDINI. Having dreamed up THE ATTICO together in September of 2015 and officially launched only FIVE MONTHS later, they embody a living example of the potent reality shifts that occur when total commitment to a dream is made. In TORDINI’S own words, she puts it best -  “If you’re 100% sure of what you’re doing, and you have a strong idea - DO IT.” Having each left their separate fashion consulting jobs to create a product that was missing from the fashion scene, AMBROSIO and TORDINI speak of imagining the woman who embodied a confidence and perspective as opulent as the highest floor in a building. CONFIDENCE, the heart of the brand, is right in line: attico, after all, translates in Italian to penthouse. They adapt each season by organically shaping this woman of confidence, diving into the music she listens to and her personality, for example. MUSIC IS NO BACKGROUND NOISE for these two. Instead, sound is FRONT AND CENTER to their creative process. With soundtracks locked and loaded, ARMAN and the duo grace through CHER, MADONNA, CERRONE, ARETHA, CHIC, and OMAR S. It’s hard to leave their atelier - which was originally built as an architects studio in mid-century style. Alas, ARMAN gets up and off the sofa, ready to dance with the duo and celebrate when dreams come to fruition, and great minds think alike. www.areweonair.com/the-attico www.instagram.com/areweonair/ www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
Through music, we’re able to find each other. ‘MUSIC IS CALLING TOWARDS RESCUE.’ SEUN KUTI joins ARMAN in London. CHARISMATIC, CONVERSATIONAL, and FASCINATING - KUTI touches on the most important choice we make as humans: the commitment to make decisions in alignment with what kind of human you want to be. Calling to the youth, he explains why a real artist makes this choice - to create art that’s elevating. With this responsibility, there’s no room for the patronising, commodifying, or low vibrational. KUTI speaks of the disconnection of the African people, describing the African spirit as uniting through music. In his own words, ’THE SKY MUST BE BIG ENOUGH FOR ALL BIRDS TO FLY.’ A dad and husband before anything, he picks The Supremes BABY LOVE as a song to describe him. Taking us through his childhood and teen years, KUTI is a natural born leader - first captain of his football team, then with big dreams to become an economist. Nevertheless, a lifelong career in music was spurred by his desire to wake up on his own schedule, and dedicate himself to a craft he will continue to distill through his entire life. ‘Music is the only thing you can do forever.’ www.areweonair.com/seun-kuti www.instagram.com/areweonair/ www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
Whether they’re hunting for records in the underground of a Seoul arcade, recording new music in an empty barn in the middle of a Texas bird sanctuary, KHRAUNGBIN is a real ORIGINAL. LAURA LEE and DONALD JOHNSON (MARK SPEER unfortunately not present) join ARMAN to discuss what makes a band burn a LONG, SLOW BURN. It’s all about feeling the music, - it becomes clear, as JOHNSON describes one day on a whim deciding to give Kool & The Gang’s SUMMER MADNESS a run through. That song, now a part of every set, has the kind of magic KHRAUNGBIN covets - a sexy, classic, layered, peaceful embrace for the ears. Talks of ROY AYERS, THE POLICE, and those songs that LIVE IN MOVIE SCENES AND ONLY MOVIE SCENES make this episode a delight. ARMAN waves goodbye and feverishly writes down the name of the arcade so he can visit next time in Seoul. We can all take a page from KHRAUNGBIN’s book. www.areweonair.com/khruangbin www.instagram.com/areweonair/ www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
Arman meets LUDOVIC DE SAINT SERNIN at his Marais atelier to find out why this rising star is on everyone’s lips. Bonding over a bottle of champagne, LUDOVIC and Arman go through it all: fashion, Paris's burgeoning party scene, what being masculine means in 2022, the role music plays in his creative process, DJ'ing for his friends and what erotica sounds to him. Known for his genre-defying collections, LUDOVIC is very adamant when asked what masculinity means to him: "MASCULINITY TODAY IS MORE ABOUT BEING IN TOUCH WITH YOUR EXPERIENCES AND THEN DEFINE YOURSELF THROUGH THAT". We say bravo! www.areweonair.com/ludovic-de-saint-sernin www.instagram.com/areweonair/ www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
It’s sunny in LONDON - which makes it the most beautiful place on earth. The birds are singing, and ARMAN has the pleasure of sitting down with the lovely as she is chic CAMILLE CHARRIÈRE. After changing careers from becoming a lawyer, CHARRIÈRE describes how living in London ‘gave her wings’ and taught her she didn't have to conform. On experiencing the ART OF TOLERANCE, Charrière celebrates sweet individuality. In her own words, she says "music is a language in itself - we all have our own". In her collection, PUCCINI, VERDI, CRYSTAL WATERS, LILLY ALLEN, PETULA CLARK and CHARLES AZNAVOUR rub shoulders. Explaining music's ability to find you when you need it the most, the song that seeks her is Amy Winehouse's 'Back to Black'. Just like her style, she's timeless. Plotting a CLASSICAL MUSICAL REVOLUTION with the goal of sharing and spreading its gift with the younger generation - there's nothing she can’t do. www.areweonair.com/camille-charriere www.instagram.com/areweonair/ www.instagram.com/armannafeei/

CHRONIXX and ARMAN sit down in Paddington to discuss SOUND WARS IN THE SONIC WORLD, Bob Marley’s poetry which is only intended to be heard with a discerning ear, as well as the spontaneous combustion of innovation that is DANCEHALL MUSIC. In his own words, Chronixx sets it straight: “MUSIC IS NOT LIKE ANY OTHER ART. WITH MUSIC, WE’RE MANIPULATING THE INVISIBLE.” Growing up listening to gospel, 1980’s dancehall, reggae, and even Céline Dion, CHRONIXX is refreshingly unconcerned with following the zeitgeist of anything, and more focused on distilling the sounds that arise from culture as it operates at its highest level. At this level of mixing, it’s all about cultures coming together to influence and educate each other - not taking or emulating patterns, but pushing them further. WE’LL ALL GO FAR TOGETHER - and Chronixx leads the way. Enjoy! www.areweonair.com/chronixx www.instagram.com/areweonair/ www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
Turn on, tune in, drop out! CHRIS BLACK and JASON STEWART join Arman for a little tête-à-tête that will feel like time is slipping like sand through an hourglass. Tuning in from the leafy suburbs of Glendale, the boys use their well-honed cultural commentary skills to go through their character defining musical choices. But make no mistake: in classic HOW LONG GONE fashion, each choice is infused with the nonchalant ease that CHRIS and JASON have already accustomed us to. Be it JASON making the case on the advantages of exclusivity - "When it's so homogeneous, there's so little to clamp on to, that it identifies you with no identity" - or CHRIS reflecting on how the evolution of music distribution shape music fandom and the underlying culture that stems from it - "Today's low barrier of entry to music access changes the perception, the fandom and the tribes that genres create" -, CHRIS and JASON leave no question unattended. www.areweonair.com/how-long-gone www.instagram.com/areweonair/ www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
THE BLESSED MADONNA invites Arman to Hackney to dive into her fantastic repertoire. Referencing APHEX TWIN’S WINDOWLICKER, she describes her idea of the POWER OF CONVENTION: “Using convention shows people what world we’re in. Breaking convention shows people where the possibilities are.” INSIGHT comes naturally to THE BLESSED MADONNA; this duality of perspective she takes by not frowning upon, but instead BREAKING THROUGH convention applies beautifully to both the way she creates and the music which inspires her. A JOY to be in her presence, THE MADONNA makes Arman nearly fall out of his chair as she describes THE GREATEST NIGHT OF HER LIFE. It’s at Berghain where she’s been playing for so long that her JEANS RIP clean through the back. WE LOVE THE BLESSED MADONNA for her contagious sense of humour, shared love of ‘FOLLOW ME’ and Amanda Lear, as well as every other detail that makes her, HER. With a farewell, Arman finally catches his breath and we immediately add all of her songs to our playlist to study up. www.areweonair.com/the-blessed-madonna www.instagram.com/areweonair/ www.instagram.com/armannafeei/

Nearly 4 years since they last saw each other in LA, PAUL KALKBRENNER meets Arman in his emerald green 1961 Maserati Ghibli for a chat in BERLIN. Bonding over a love of Mozart, KALKBRENNER mentions he was a terrible instrumentalist as a child, having learned and suffered on the TRUMPET. The KEY to this experience, however, was that he never let it deter him from pursuing music. He may be one of technos biggest superstars, but the biggest thing that defines his career? TENACITY. In his own words, KALKBRENNER describes this force of self-determination that built his launch pad: “there were many hard years, but I STUCK WITH IT.” Referencing a few of his earliest musical memories, he shares love at first listen was ISAO TOMITA’s Picture at the Exhibition: II. Admiring the LAYERS of sound woven into the song he heard blaring from his parents double cassette tape, KALKBRENNER realised that - the art of layering - was exactly what he wanted to master. Swerving between German and English, Arman and K could chat for hours. East Germany, during his childhood, looked exactly like the pictures - grey. KALKBRENNER describes the sound of footsteps from the border guards as the only noise from the street at night. These nights had an impact on his craft, as KALKBRENNER believes silence is as important to sound. His warning to the music industry? Do not change because of the times. Instead, use time as a resource to distill your own authentic sound. Slipping into his DRIVING GLOVES to get back on the road, the lyrics “right here, right now” play over the layers of his own track, leaving us with a message. We have the power to make dreams reality if we are tenacious enough. https://areweonair.com/paul-kalkbrenner https://www.instagram.com/areweonair/ https://www.instagram.com/armannafeei/

YANN TIERSEN calls Arman from his studio for a conversation set amidst a blinkering of blue and orange lights from the sound dials, hard drives and synthesisers behind him. While he’s a known legend of cinematic scoring, Tiersen insists that the best soundtrack is not necessarily a composed soundtrack - but using music. Referencing this proper “usage” of music in film, Tiersen points to the master Kubrick himself. Living close to nature is an important part of his life and his music. TIERSEN is the kind of artist who treasures the simple, sacred things, like life without the sound of constant motor engines, or owning a record or book he loves in its physical form because for him, it’s “a piece of me.” Though Tiersen exudes a sense of peace in his speech and thought processes, he shares that there is a world of chaos at the core of his creative process. When he gets into the studio, he’s inspired by PLAY and ‘MAKING TONS OF NOISE.’ Reminding us that life really should be all about making noise and having fun, TIERSEN’s humbling answer to Arman’s final question brings even more importance to that message. Shortly after Arman asks: “if your life is a movie, what will play in the end credits?” To that TIERSEN responds: “Nothing. A sine wave.” Waving goodbye, we thank YANN for sharing a glimpse into his twinkling mind. https://areweonair.com/yann-tiersen https://www.instagram.com/areweonair/ https://www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
THIS IS IT. Staying true to her Turkish roots, NILÜFER YANYA is inspired by INSTINCT, foremost, and MELODY second.  Calling from London, NILÜFER and Arman bond over a shared love as she references the Strokes This Is It as an album that’s stood the test of time, and only gets better. For NILÜFER, inspiration is everywhere - but writing, instinctively, “comes from nowhere.” Bringing us into her creative process, she shares that the beginning of a new song unfolds itself musically first, while language comes in second. Other times, it’s simply hearing the cadence of words in a phrase that will send her into a writers frenzy. This lovely, SPIRIT OF THE MOMENT, YANYA shares with us - making this episode a listeners pleasure. https://www.areweonair.com/nilfer-yanya https://www.instagram.com/areweonair/ https://www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
Amidst 2021's Berlin Gallery Weekend infamous Are We On Air pop-up in Berlin, Arman meets art impresario JOHANN KÖNIG at Unter Den Linden. With a music selection that ranges from 90's euro-trash to today's latest Tik Tok viral song, JOHANN dwells on the ever changing city that is Berlin (and how he has no patience for the nostalgia infused talk of the 'good ol'days') and how being a gallerist in the age of NFT's is exciting as it ever was. Talking about how the late Virgil Abloh paved the way for a no-thrills approach to culture, JOHANN wants art to be appreciated as one appreciates music: "People consume art as they consume music. You listen to a song, you like it or not, it creates reaction with you or not. That's it!". We say BRAVO! https://areweonair.com/johann-konig https://www.instagram.com/areweonair/ https://www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
In the courtyard of the Chateau Marmont, you’ll find the sunshine where CL is singing Arman a traditional Korean song her grandmother sang to her while growing up. While she might be one of the worlds biggest POPSTARS, CL glows with the same warmth and joy on stage in front of millions as she does in a one on one encounter with a new friend — “I feel what I feel in the moment to the fullest, so I don’t have anything left behind that I need to solve later.” If we can all take a page from CL’s book, its to not take life too seriously, and weather the wind of our emotions with a self-loving self awareness. She is bold, pragmatic, and exuberant but she is soft. On the topic of heartbreak, the K-pop sensation describes the delicate balance of keeping her personal life private without ‘hiding’ it from her art. CL strikes a balance between forging a powerful career as a solo artist, and finding inspiration in any way shape or form that beauty finds her in life. CL shares that when she’s out with friends, she always passes the aux to discover new songs — new songs are her surefire way to inspire new memories. Flipping through fashion archives as one source of her inspiration, Arman and CL bond over a shared love of Raf Simons. Gracefully, after 15 years of being at the pinnacle of the public eye, CL evolves into an even stronger and more beautiful butterfly every corner she turns. Get some fresh AIR and sunshine: It’s CL’s dawn, her day, and we’re feeling good . . . https://areweonair.com/-cl https://www.instagram.com/areweonair/ https://www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
For most of us, ’DISTURBING’ is an adjective used to convey a sense of anxiety and upset; to RICK OWENS, ‘disturbing’ invokes an instinctive THRILL - the starting point of exploration. In the bottom of a Porterville K-MART bargain basement, OWENS dug up David Bowie’s DIAMOND DOGS. The ‘excitement, disturb, confusion and guilt’ that album cover evoked in him became a self defined SELF DEFINING moment. Though it wasn’t until years later that he heard the album, the MIXTURE OF GLAMOUR AND THE GROTESQUE stuck with him and became a part of his perspective forever. There’s something exciting about the way that Owens describes how he actively searches for music, ‘taking one pathway that leads me to another, that leads me to another, and another, I keep going and going.” It’s this insatiable curiosity that transfixes the material mundane with meticulous detail and travels beyond a limited “I” view. Through his RESPECT FOR THE RAW gesture in one’s career that catapults it to wider success, Owens RELINQUISHES CONTROL. Knowing that the response to what he puts into the world is not always as important as it’s made out to be is an act of faith that Owens reveres with a refreshing humility: “I DIDN’T SET OUT TO BE REMEMBERED FOR SNEAKERS AND DROP CROTCH SHORTS, BUT THAT’S WHO I’M GOING TO BE FOREVER.” https://areweonair.com/rick-owens https://www.instagram.com/areweonair/ https://www.instagram.com/armannafeei/

BUSY P welcomes Arman into Ed Banger in Montmarte. Born to bring the headbangers, indie romantics, hip hop kids and techno heads together, PEDRO describes the DNA of Ed Banger Records; a place where the integrity and energy of music is felt and expressed in the freshest, sexiest way. There’s a certain magic in the air as Pedro shares his belief that “LONGEVITY is the best proof of success.” Alluding to DAFT PUNK for teaching him that “knowing what you want to do is as important as knowing what you don’t want to do,” Pedro shares ideas from their synergy working together. Hinting caution to the new youth, Pedro warns “music is not something you swipe, but something you FEEL.” As important as mixing genres and people is, so is understanding the boundaries that lend themselves to the contrast which make them beautiful. Referencing the Beastie Boys 'Check Your Head,' Kraftwerk, Metallica and MC Solaar, Pedro’s soundtrack reflects his appetite for questioning standards, pushing boundaries, and then bringing them all together. An old soul but perpetually cool kid, BUSY P waves au revoir to get busy again and Arman steps back out onto the cobbled streets of the 18th arrondissement. https://areweonair.com/busy-p https://www.instagram.com/areweonair/ https://www.instagram.com/armannafeei/

POWER is a language IAN ISIAH invented himself. Thanks to GOSPEL for the the introduction to his musicianship, and later on the hot and heavy backbeat of R&B, ISIAH radiates fearless sexuality, free spirited expression, and deep humility for those he idolises that came before him. These artists are deeply ingrained into the fabric of his life - whether it’s the montage of Whitney Houston in his room, or the way he pauses in conversation to harmonise Mary J Blige’s “my life, my life, my life,” ISIAH’s joy is contagious. BIG HEART ENERGY, a flow he’s been able to really step into since the start of the pandemic, pours through him as he describes the first time he fell in love with Beyonce, through “Gift From a Virgo.” In his own words, ISIAH reminds us that LOVE IS A VERB. In that same spirit, it’s refreshing to hear that while ISIAH’s never stops learning from his idols (JAMES BROWN, LUTHER VANDROSS, TANK) he remains as open to the new generation of music as the old. With a penchant for spontaneity, MERT ALAS brings us back to when he first felt the power of music while sneaking out into the concert halls at his classical conservatory boarding school in Ankara and looking for ghosts. Coming of age in the early nineties in London, fashion and self expression are a part of his hard wired DNA. After 29 years of Mert & Marcus taking over the world with their craft, Mert describes claiming the right of self expression as an act of respect and an uncompromisable quality in their vision. Drawn to Turkish psychedelic rock from the 60’s for its own MIND MANIFESTING self expression, Mert references the way his childhood experiences of being dragged into loud Turkish tavernas in the 80’s leaves a lasting impact on how he experiences music and art. With an energetic magnetism like Mert’s, it’s no surprise to hear him tell the story of how he first met Bjork, for example. Tune in, pop open some @seventyonegin to be reinvigorated with the hot pulse of deep 90’s house, and the romantically tragic vocals of George Michael that make up the soundtrack to Mert’s life. https://areweonair.com/mert-alas https://www.instagram.com/areweonair/ https://www.instagram.com/armannafeei/

Following AMANDA LEAR through the soundtrack to her life is pure pleasure. From her dreams of being a painter leading her to befriend SALVADOR DALÍ, creating a wild persona for herself modeled off SUPERWOMAN, to holding a real live PANTHER on a leash for the cover of ROXY MUSIC’s For Your Pleasure, Lear is an absolute icon for trailblazing her own way without asking permission - the EPITOME of CHARISMA. Join Arman and Amanda in this episode which KICKS OFF SEASON 3 to the absolutely UNAPOLOGETIC tempo of upbeat DISCO. More than disco, we will learn from the QUEEN herself; starting from her years at art school, living in the latin quarter of Paris. A natural born storyteller, Lear shares the trajectory of her music career from the moment DAVID BOWIE noticed the beauty in her voice and encouraged her to SING, to going her own way without looking back and recording FOLLOW ME in Munich. Unlike music, it’s the ongoing process of painting which most inspires Lear and keeps her happy. She says it best in her own words: “because I paint, I feel much more balanced. Painting helped me a lot. Otherwise, like everybody else, I would have to take drugs.” If anyone can tell a story with GUSTO TO SPARE, it’s Lear. Captivating ears for generations, it’s a standing ovation for Ep 55 of Season 3 starring AMANDA LEAR. https://areweonair.com/amandalear https://www.instagram.com/areweonair/ https://www.instagram.com/armannafeei/

On his first episode, Arman goes through what he has been up to for the last 6 months. ‘So long and so young and so beautiful’, CAMÉLIA JORDANA and Arman bond over their love of Maria Callas in celebration of #ValentinoRendezVous. Between whispering harmonies of Calla's The Barber of Seville and Nina Simone’s I Get Along Without You Very Well, Jordana explains her admiration for the women who came before her and their strength in communicating their powerful truths for the world, no matter how intense and sincere. Naming the “magic combo,” Jordana empathizes with the 'sadness, love and tenderness' throughout Nina Simone’s repertoire. Growing up in an Algerian and Berber Kabyle family, Jordana describes music as a way of living, and rhythm a gift from her roots. Accompanying her mother to her singing classes at the tender age of two, she describes learning to sing at the same time as learning to speak deep inside her musical identity. The shared space between singing and speaking are felt not only as she shares the soundtrack to her life, but sings it too. Crediting Doris Day’s Que Sera Sera as a steady source of inspiration to trust in the future, and trust in herself, Camélia says goodbye - taking a piece of all of our hearts with her. https://areweonair.com/camelia-jordana https://www.instagram.com/areweonair/ https://www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
Tucked inside the busy streets of Marais's Le Carreau du Temple, Arman Naféei rendezvous with French artist ICHON in celebration of #ValentinoRendezVous. Discussing ideas currently distilling in his mind, Ichon finds inspiration in the beauty of contrast. Welcoming listeners into this delicate balance, Ichon shares a line he wrote from "+ C'est pas le moment": "Prends-moi par la main sans la retenir,' (Hold my hand, but don't keep it.) For Ichon, words come first in their simplicity, but second to the importance of feeling and understanding. With a talent for feeling the nuance and contrast in writing, Ichon shares that his music conveys emotions deeply personal to his life, yet universal in their nature. Without the need to catch your attention,Ichon masters the art of subtlety, maintaining the mystery and nuance that make experience beautiful. Just after hanging her latest exhibition at the Whitney, JULIE MEHRETU dials Arman from home. Growing up a child of the early 70's during the height of the Pan-African post colonial movement, Mehretu shares a lifetime of music and stories as perceptive as her art. Forging a connection between her innate drive to create and Iran's culture in which art is as essential as breathing oxygen, Farahani describes her life as a bridge between West and East. Quoting the great Rumi: “The reason a bamboo becomes a flute is because it’s empty,” listeners can feel the divine melody that fills FARAHANI’S being, emitting light through a darker time for humanity. Beyond profundity, perhaps, is the very idea of silence as truth. To slip into a new persona, Farahani speaks of channeling the quieter realms of existing in which no words, noises, or even attempts of expression can match the very essence of BEING. Being, beautifully, as Farahani embodies, comes with the acceptance of death, silence, the spaces between. Diving into those spaces, it’s clear that any room she walks into takes on a higher frequency before - Farahani is electric, alluring, and very much herself. Describing everything from music being a medium of memories, the beauty of 'nothingness', Prince and MJ's ability to channel melodies from above, Farahani's words flow like poetry. Listen and you'll learn, love and be lifted up.

Envisioning the future of art as nothing other than a pure transmission of energy between viewer and artist, Abramović radiates brilliance, self-possession, and comes across as a living example of why we should all live life with the courage to continue falling in love again, and again. There are no limitations, no barriers, and no ‘no’’s in her way.
