Over the course of their career, Pantera released several successful albums and established themselves as one of the most influential bands in the heavy metal genre. However, it was their 1992 album, "Vulgar Display of Power," that solidified their place in the heavy metal pantheon. The album is considered by many to be their magnum opus, showcasing the band's raw power, aggression, and technical prowess. The Vinyl Boyz are back dropping the needle on "Ten" by Pearl Jam. Ten is the debut studio album by American rock band Pearl Jam, released on August 27, 1991, through Epic Records. Ten was not an immediate success, but by late 1992 it had reached number two on the Billboard 200. The album produced three hit singles: "Alive", "Even Flow", and "Jeremy". Despite its reputation as a quintessential grunge album, Ten is often noted for displaying a stronger classic rock influence than other contemporary grunge releases. Ten has been described as a grunge, alternative rock, and hard rock album. Were back with Dem Vinyl Boyz this week and were diving into the debut album of Atlanta's most iconic rap group, OutKast. Their debut album "Southernplayalisticadillacmizik" released April 26, 1994, was largely influential in the Atlanta rap scene and helped distinguish Southern hip hop as a credible hip hop scene during East Coast and West Coast hip hop's market dominance at the time. "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" incorporates analog elements such as Southern-styled guitar licks, languid soul melodies, mellow 1970s funk grooves, digital hip hop production elements such as programmed snare beats, booty bass elements, including Roland TR-808 clave rhythms, and old school hip hop elements, including E-mu SP-1200-styled drums and turntable scratches. Wanting to make a statement about urban life as an African American in South Atlanta, OutKast wrote and recorded the album as teenagers and addressed coming of age themes with the album's songs.  "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" charted at number 20 on the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified Platinum in the United States, denoting one million copies sold. After the album was certified platinum, LaFace Records gave Outkast more creative control and advanced money for their 1996 follow-up album ATLiens, which some consider to be an all time classic. His most popular achievement, which threw off seven Top Ten hits and became one of the best-selling albums of all time. It has been certified 17× Platinum by the RIAA, having sold over 17 million units in the United States, and over 30 million copies worldwide. Born in the U.S.A. topped the charts in nine different countries, including the United Kingdom and Australia, becoming his most commercially successful album and one of the best-selling albums of all time. It is a pristine and precise record whose synth pads, massive drums, and front-and-center vocals represent the defining qualities of the 80s mainstream rock production.With strikingly somatic sounds, the music and melodies begin to feel alive. Most of the songs were recorded live by the band in just a few takes, with Springsteen shouting cues and can be heard whooping and hollering off mic. Dem Vinyl Boyz are back in the studio and this week they're dropping the needle on Dr. Dre's 'The Chronic'. A triple platinum record released in December of 1992 from West Coast rapper and producer Dr. Dre along with another little known artist you may have heard of, Snoop Dogg. 'The Chronic' reached number three on the Billboard 200 and has sales of over three million copies in the United States, making Dre one of the top ten best-selling American artists of 1993. As a member of N.W.A. in the mid-1980s, Dre was a star, but he was convinced that Easy-E—the head of his record label, Ruthless and fellow N.W.A. member—was trying to swindle him. Dre established himself as not just an unrivaled producer but an innovative visionary. His debut album, 1992’s ‘The Chronic’ is an ingenious campaign with half-truths so vibrant they blurred the lines of what was real. It redefined the West Coast sound, it is considered one of the most renowned hip-hop albums of all time and made gangster rap that was approachable to pop radio and MTV. In essence, The Chronic brought hardcore hip-hop to the suburbs. Were back this week with Dem Vinyl Boyz to listen to one of the most well received metal albums of the 80's, ACDC's "Back In Black." Following the bands initial success with hit album "Highway to Hell", they were already planning their next big follow up album. Sadly, around February of 1980, lead singer Bon Scott passed away from alcohol poisoning after a drinking binge. The band decided instead of disbanding, they would bring in Brian Johnson, former singer for Geordie. Fashioned with an all black cover symbolizing the mourning of late band mate Bon Scott, "Back in Black" was an unprecedented commercial and critical success. Based on its commercial and critical success alone, this album can be considered one of the best selling albums in music history, selling over 50 million copies world-wide. Some of the album's success relates to the yearlong world tour supporting the album that cemented them among the most popular music acts of the early 1980s. The album was certified 25× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), making it the fourth best-selling album in the United States, and the best-selling album that never reached the top spot on the American charts. The album received positive critical reception at the time of its initial release, and has since been included on numerous lists of "greatest" albums. Dem Vinyl Boyz are back this week to drop the needle on Linkin Parks third studio album, "Minutes To Midnight." This album is the band's follow-up album to "Meteora", and features a shift in the group's musical direction than the 2003 sessions while working with producer Rick Rubin. For the band, the album marked a beginning of deviation from their signature nu metal sound. The album was produced by Mike Shinoda and Rick Rubin, and debuted at number one in the US Billboard 200 and in 15 other countries, including the United Kingdom and Canada. In the United States, the album had the biggest first week sales of 2007 at the time, with 623,000 albums sold, going on to be certified five times platinum in the US. It was also certified double platinum in New Zealand, Italy, Ireland, and Australia and certified platinum in Canada, France, Switzerland and in the UK. In an interview, lead singer Chester Bennington explained that the album is "a mix of punk, classic rock, and hip-hop standards" and that "Rick has brought more of a stripped down, classic-rock and hip-hop kind of feel." The bands goal for this album was to portray themselves in a different way and showcase a new style of their music. Five singles were released from the album: "What I've Done", "Bleed It Out", "Shadow of the Day", "Given Up", and "Leave Out All the Rest". "Given Up" had already charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Pop 100 charts at numbers 99 and 78 respectively in 2007, and "Leave Out All the Rest" had already charted on Billboard's Pop 100 chart at number 98 and Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart at number 17 in 2007. Despite its commercial success, Minutes to Midnight received mixed reviews from critics. Dem Vinyl Boyz are back diving straight into Nas' debut studio album "Illmatic". This album was released on April 19, 1994, by Columbia Records, produced by DJ Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, L.E.S., and Nas himself. Nas, who was twenty years old when the album was released, focuses on depicting his own experiences, creating highly detailed first-person narratives that deconstruct the troubled life of an inner city teenager. Nas said in an interview in 2001: “When I made Illmatic I was a little kid in Queensbridge trapped in the ghetto. My soul was trapped in Queensbridge projects.” Styled as a hardcore hip hop album, “Illmatic” features internal rhymes and inner-city narratives based on Nas' experiences growing up in the Queensbridge Houses in Queens, New York City. In a 2012 interview, Nas explains what he wants the take away from his album to be, he says "I want you to know who I am: what the streets taste like, feel like, smell like. What the cops talk like, walk like, think like. What crackheads do — I wanted you to smell it, feel it. It was important to me that I told the story that way because I thought that it wouldn't be told if I didn't tell it." The album debuted at number 12 on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 63,000 copies in its first week. However, its initial sales fell below expectations and its five singles failed to achieve significant chart success. Despite the album's low initial sales, “Illmatic” received rave reviews from most music critics, who praised its production and Nas' lyricism. Dem Vinyl Boyz are dropping the needle this week from the Franklin Social House taking their vinyl on the road for all to hear. 'Billy Joel's Greatest Hits' was released in 1987 which includes the artist's work from 1973 to 1985 and contains some of his most renowned records such as “Piano Man”, “Uptown Girl”', and “The Longest Time”. The album is certified double diamond and has sold over 23 million units tying Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' for the sixth most certified album of all time in the United States.  The album kicks off with "Piano Man," the first disc runs through a good chunk of his early work before arriving at his golden age of the late '70s; some of these songs, including "Captain Jack" and "New York State of Mind," weren't strictly hits, but were popular within his stage show and became radio hits. Over the next disc and a half, there's so many hits, it's inevitable that some are left off such as "Honesty" and "Sometimes a Fantasy" but still includes "Just the Way You Are," "Only the Good Die Young," "My Life," "You May Be Right," "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," "Don't Ask Me Why," "Allentown," "Tell Her About It" and "Uptown Girl," among many others are present and accounted for. Dem Vinyl Boyz are back this week we’re diving into one of the most prolific debut albums that tackles political issues with undeniable conviction, Rage Against The Machine. These guys created this album with a purpose, displaying a photo of the self-immolation of Thích Quảng Đức, a vietnamese monk, on the album cover. He was protesting President Ngô Đình Diệm's administration for oppressing the Buddhist religion and the international attention this photo gained persuaded U.S. President John F. Kennedy to withdraw support for Diệm's government. The songs on Rage Against the Machine all feature political messages with activists such as Provisional IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands and Black Panther Party founder Huey P. Newton are listed in the "Thanks For Inspiration" section. Through this album's success, it remains an essential call to activism and a necessary lesson on how to withstand the opposition. Aside from the album's obvious political themes, the music itself defies the way "normal" albums would be released and offers a genre-bending experience that makes it difficult to categorize as one specific thing. Throwing mixes of rock, funk, and rap throughout the album, it is recognized as one of the first albums to successfully merge the seemingly contrasting sounds of rap and heavy metal. Dem Vinyl Boys are back droppin' the needle on one of the most legendary Hip Hop albums of the 90's, "Doggystyle", by none other than Snoop Dogg himself. Dem Vinyl Boyz are back again to listen to some classic 80s vinyl from legendary pop star Madonna. Her sophomore album 'Like a Virgin' dropped November 12th, 1984 and while making her a household name also came with a lot of controversy because of her overtly sexual lyrics and performances. The album sold over 21 million copies and is one of the best selling albums of all time, often regarded as the birth of pop as we know it today. Madonna went into 'Like a Virgin' wrestling Warner Bros. for more artistic control. After she had negative experiences working with Reggie Lucas, she wanted to have a bigger voice for the production of the album, and she found a winning collaborator in guitarist Nile Rodgers, who’d just worked on David Bowie’s Let’s Dance.   “Like a Virgin,” was Madonna’s first No. 1 pop hit. It’s here that she most explicitly tackles sexual politics and explores that whole virgin-whore thing so central to her image. The other is “Material Girl,” a winking gold-digger anthem that can be taken a couple of different ways. Dem Vinyl Boyz are back again this week to drop the needle on David Bowie's fifteenth studio album, 'Let's Dance'. This was Bowie's best selling album of his career, reaching number one on charts in numerous countries. This commercial success led David Bowie into becoming a major superstar and getting well recognized by the populous. On this album, Bowie apparently chose to only sing and played no instruments, instead he got some new players including Texas blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan playing the lead guitar.  Let's Dance has been reviewed musically as a post-disco record, with elements of dance-rock, dance-pop and new wave. It holds three cover songs: Iggy Pop's "China Girl", which Bowie and Pop had recorded together for the latter's The Idiot (1977); Metro's "Criminal World"; and a reworking of "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)", originally recorded by Bowie and Giorgio Moroder in 1982 for the film "Cat People". The album also contained four hit singles that were all commercial successes, but the air play of music videos for "Let's Dance" and "China Girl'' on MTV were one of the main sources for the success for this album. Legend is a greatest hits collection of singles in its original vinyl format. It has sold over 12 million copies in the US, 3.3 million in the UK and an estimated 25 million copies sold globally and in 2003, the album was ranked number 46 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". It also went on maintaining the ranking in a 2012 revised list, but dropping to number 48 in the 2020 revised list. Bob Marley and the Wailers "Legend" was such a massive success that even still as of December 13, 2022, Legend has spent a total of 760 nonconsecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 albums chart—the second longest run in history. Legend is a historic album and remains a compelling introduction to Bob Marley’s music and to reggae as a whole.

Dem Vinyl Boyz are coming straight outta your speakers and into your ears. This week they're dropping the needle on one of the most iconic records of all time 'Straight Outta Compton'. The debut album from late 80s and early 90s rap group N.W.A. set the world on fire depicting the violence you may see on a day to day basis in south central L.A. and even threatening the corrupt L.A. police. It’s a pioneer of the rap industry and was a staple for many of the hip-hop albums you'll hear today. This record sold nearly four million copies and was Gangsta Rap's first platinum record, needless to say it deserves its props. The openers — “Straight Outta Compton”, “Fuck tha Police”, and “Gangsta Gangsta” — are what the album is remembered for and rightly so. They are as prominent a rap group as you’re ever likely to hear, and the flows of Ice Cube, MC Ren, and Eazy-E bounce off of each other effortlessly. The synergy of the group still inspires awe. Together they comprised, as Kendrick Lamar recently put it, ‘the perfect cast of characters.’ This album is still an essential entry for hip-hop and the fact that it remains broadly relevant after 30 years is a testament to its quality. Though the band put nearly no energy into making it, Mötley Crüe achieved its most substantial commercial success to date with “Theatre of Pain” (1985). That probably wasn’t the best motivation to work harder on the follow-up, 1987’s “Girls, Girls, Girls.” It doesn’t mean the band was complacent. The opener, “Wild Side,” is an ominous, deep track illustrating an urban nightmare of drugs and violence, a clear indicator that the glossy, pop-metal sheen of “Theatre of Pain'' is a thing of the past. It’s followed by “Girls, Girls, Girls,” the ultimate exercise in self-indulgence and maybe the greatest strip club anthem ever written. No pair of songs in the Mötley catalog describes the band better than this one. Girls, Girls, Girls continued Mötley Crüe’s super stardom while becoming the band's third straight album to go quadruple platinum. Overall, it’s an astute journal from a band that was having the time of their lives and just enjoying the ride—while simultaneously making great music. Dem Vinyl Boyz are back again and this week they're dropping the needle on some 90s Vinyl from the legendary rock band Nirvana. 'In Utero' coming two years after their second studio album 'Nevermind' which went on to change music history selling over 30 million copies. Their third studio album was unfortunately Nirvana's last, after lead singer Kurt Cobain tragically passed away after an alleged suicide. In Utero is contrarian rock, it’s meant to be everything Nevermind wasn’t and perhaps nothing illustrates that more clearly than the rough, dissonant chord that spearheads Serve the Servants. It’s not exactly a song I would call strenuous, but it’s abrasive and confrontational. The Vinyl Boyz listen to old interviews with Kurt Cobain which were few and far between due to his reclusive nature. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album and has been certified five-times platinum. It’s an amazing, cohesive body of work that completely illustrates all the nuances that made up the complicated persona of Pac. His previous works showed flashes of brilliance, but Me Against the World became a manifestation of his artistic vision and his ongoing evolution as a Black man in America during the 90s. “Dear Mama” released as the lead single on the album peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100, going platinum, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance. When rock critic connoisseur's refer to him as the creator of a generation's most potent exceptional music, this is the album they're talking about. What Hendrix musically compassed on this record expanded the canvas of what an artist could generate out of a modern recording studio. Tragically Hendrix would lose his life less than two years after this album was released due to asphyxia while intoxicated with barbiturates. He was a legendary icon who created art that can never be replicated in any shape or form as well as pioneering a path for fellow guitarists and musicians to follow and evolve the craft. Dem Vinyl Boyz are back again and this week they're scratching 'Licensed to Ill' a classic record from the eighties by Rock n Roll Hall of Famers The Beastie Boys. This album was a pioneer for hip-hop history as it was the first hip-hop album to ever top the Billboard 200, was certified Platinum, and it sold over 10 million copies. Licensed To Ill was a pun based on a 1965 imitation James Bond film, Licensed To Kill. Strangely, the album pre-dated a real James Bond movie entitled License To Kill by three years. The album’s cover artwork which has gone down in infamy was created by collage artist World B Omes and illustrated an airplane crashing into the side of a cliff. Held up to a mirror, the plane’s serial number, 3MTA3, reads like “EATME”, which was on purpose of course. On this week's episode of Dem Vinyl Boyz we drop the needle on a rare 80's record from Alfred Matthew AKA "Weird Al Yankovic." Even Worse was Yankovic's fifth studio album and parodies Michael Jacksons 'Bad' album on the cover. His previous record 'Polka Party' was widely considered a commercial failure and was released to mixed but mostly negative reviews. Even Worse came and revitalized his career bringing mostly positive reviews and peaking at no. 27 on the billboard 200 while also becoming Al's best selling album. Michael Jackson, who was actually a big fan of Yankovic's work, bought copies of his music for his whole family even supporting Weird Al by letting him use the location set for 'Bad' for his parody 'Fat'. The music video was credited with helping boost the success of "I'm Fat”. In fact, it set a whole new standard for parody artists because of the state-of-the-art special effects he used such as the fat suit Yankovic had designed for himself. Alanis Morrisette sold more copies of Jagged Little Pill than Metallica's Black album, Bruce Srpingsteen's Born in the USA and Guns N Roses Apetite for Destruction. Madonna the co-founder Maverick Record's label back in 1992, Her company signed a then relatively unknown 20-year-old Morissette. Just over a year later and her debut album for the label had been released and proved to be the smash record the label had envisioned. With total sales now in excess of 33 million units globally, the album not only cemented Morissette’s star status, but went 16x platinum in the US, became the best-selling debut album of all time and garnered the singer five out of the nine GRAMMY Awards she was nominated for in 1996, not to mention taking out the number one spot in a staggering 14 charts around the world. But this album is about so much more than just groundbreaking statistics—it’s a powerful album about personal experiences. Jagged Little Pill isn’t a rock record. It’s grungy discomfort set to the kinds of top 40 hooks and backing tracks one gets working a guy like Glen Ballard, who Morissette met in 1994 and quickly took a liking to. The is week on Dem Vinyl Boys we find an old record from 1968 to jam to. This was really a comeback for The Man in Black as his image was tarnished and his previous albums hadn't done as well. But this week we play back some classic interviews of Johnny telling tales of life, faith and whiskey. Johnny Cash: if you don’t know his name, you should. As a singer-songwriter, Cash sold more than 90 million albums worldwide, for a multitude of genres from 1955 to 2000. His album “At Folsom Prison” is a great place to start for those not familiar with him. It has a mix of so many genres there is something for everyone. Cash has collaborated with many artists including Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. In addition to receiving 11 Grammys, Cash has been inducted into the Rock and Roll and Country Music Hall of Fame His life was even the subject of the 2005 Oscar-nominated film “Walk the Line.” Cash’s 1968 live album “At Folsom Prison” made him an icon to many: from country fans who were lost, to rock fans, folk fans and people who opposed social norms. Despite a year of turmoil for Cash, involving drugs, alcohol and a rocky marriage, the musician was plain-spoken and trustworthy, which people loved. The album was recorded during a concert for the inmates inside Folsom Prison in California. Once released, it went platinum and emphasized his outlaw image because of the country-folk sound with a jailbird song influence. Listen to our other episodes as well. Thriller is the sixth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Michael Jackson, released on November 30, 1982, by Epic Records. It was produced by Quincy Jones, who had previously worked with Jackson on his 1979 album Off the Wall. Jackson wanted to create an album where "every song was a killer". With the ongoing backlash against disco music at the time, he moved in a new musical direction, resulting in a mix of pop, post-disco, rock, funk, and R&B sounds. Thriller foreshadows the contradictory themes of Jackson's personal life, as he began using a motif of paranoia and darker themes. Paul McCartney appears on "The Girl Is Mine", the first credited appearance of a featured artist on a Michael Jackson album. Recording took place from April to November 1982 at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles, California, with a budget of $750,000. With 32 million copies sold worldwide by the end of 1983, Thriller became the best-selling album of all time. It was the best-selling album of 1983 worldwide, and in 1984 it became the first album to become the best-selling in the United States for two years. It set industry standards with its songs, music videos, and promotional strategies influencing artists, record labels, producers, marketers, and choreographers. The success gave Jackson an unprecedented level of cultural significance for a black American, breaking racial barriers in popular music, earning him regular airplay on MTV and leading to a meeting with US President Ronald Reagan at the White House. Thriller was among the first albums to use music videos as promotional tools; the videos for "Billie Jean", "Beat It" and "Thriller" are credited for transforming music videos into a serious art form.

The Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die (1994) Dem Vinyl Boyz head to the home of Hip-Hop., New York City! East coast Rap at its finest. “Ready to Die” is a concept album chronicling the life and myth of the Notorious B.I.G., complete with stories of robbery, drug dealing, sex and even suicide. It was the first full-length album release from Bad Boy Records, a new imprint run by a young Sean “Puffy” Combs. Combs was very involved in the production and direction of “Ready to Die,” especially with the hit singles “Juicy” and “Big Poppa.” “Puffy was incredibly smart about branding,” Coker says, “and about how to sell this album to the masses at large.” The album features productions by Bad Boy founder Sean "Puffy" Combs, Easy Mo Bee, Chucky Thompson, DJ Premier, and Lord Finesse, among others. It was recorded from 1993 to 1994 at The Hit Factory and D&D Studios in New York City. The partly autobiographical album tells the story of the rapper's experiences as a young criminal, and was the only studio album released during his lifetime, as he was murdered sixteen days before the release of his second album Life After Death in 1997.

Dem Vinyl Boyz drop the needle on a rock record this week that ended up teaching us so much about this band. You will find out that GnR' was not a band from California, they were from Seattle, Indiana and Cleveland and only met in L.A. In an era of bad-boy rockers who weren’t terribly bad and wrote music that sounded too good, Guns N’ Roses were the genuine article. Their songs echoed with the love for rock and roll and the spirit of rebellion. When Geffen Records A&R man Tom Zutaut signed the band he had no idea what he had gotten into. No one else wanted GN’R because they were viewed as a liability, a band as likely to miss the show as perform a gangbuster set. Yet what Zutaut heard from vocalist Axl Rose, guitarists Slash and Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler was inspiring and seemed to have the potential to be a profitable signing if they didn’t all die in an alcohol or drug related mishap. Appetite for Destruction is the debut studio album by American hard rock band Guns N' Roses. It was released on July 21, 1987, by Geffen Records. The album was released to little mainstream attention in 1987. It was not until the following year that Appetite for Destruction became a commercial success, after the band had toured and received significant airplay with the singles "Welcome to the Jungle", "Paradise City" and "Sweet Child o' Mine". The album peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200 and became the seventh best-selling album of all time in the United States, as well as the best-selling debut album. With over 30 million copies sold worldwide, it is also one of the best-selling albums of all time. Although critics were originally ambivalent toward the album, Appetite for Destruction has received retrospective acclaim and has been viewed as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 2018, it was re-released as a remastered box set to similar acclaim.

(1989) 2 Live Crew - As Nasty As They Want to Be Dem Vinyl Boyz Review (Episode 08) recorded August 2022 Shakin' what ya Mama gave ya this week on Dem Vinyl Boyz Episode 08 "As Nasty As They Want To Be" from 2 Live Crew. This historical album features dope classics such as "Me So Horny", "C'Mon Babe" and "Dirty Nursery Rhymes"!!! The 2 Live Crew consists of Chris Wong Won aka "Fresh Kid Ice", David Hobbs aka "Mr. Mixx", Mark Ross aka "Brother Marquis", and Luther Campbell aka "Uncle Luke", aka "Luke Skyywalker", aka "Captain D" aka "Luke"!!! Luther Campbell was the Quarterback for 2 Live Crew. he is synonymous with Miami. It’s the city where he was born and raised. He first gained attention as one of Liberty City’s premier DJs. If you had $50, Campbell happily showed up to spin records. “I did parks, car washes, wedding receptions, baby showers, street corners,” Campbell tells SPIN from his Miami home. “I was available.” Those early sets would mostly feature Herbie Hancock, ‘70s British funk band Olympic Runners, and some reggae records. “Miami’s not really the South,” he says. “It’s a melting pot of Bahamians, Jamaicans, Cubans, Dominicans, and Puerto Ricans.” Campbell himself is the son of a Bahamian mother and Jamaican father. Then hip-hop came along, down from New York. Campbell was instantly hooked. “I started playing these records at the parks and skating rinks,” he says. Campbell then came across a California duo called 2 Live Crew. The early iteration of the group was very different from what the group would become. Their first single “Revelation” and didn’t contain a single bad word. “It was a ‘conscience’ record,” Campbell remembers. The record’s uplifting message wasn’t exactly setting the charts on fire. Not to mention the group’s lack of showmanship. “These guys were boring on stage,” he says. The 2 Live Crew’s “As Nasty as They Want to Be” is a watershed album in hip hop history. It stands to this day as arguably the dirtiest record ever laid to tape, or at least one that millions of kids heard. What made it relevant, aside from the fact it contains enormously catchy beats and rhymes (albeit stolen for the most part), is it was for a period of time declared “legally obscene.” In their infinite wisdom, the state of Florida made the act of selling this album an arrest-able offense, an enormously controversial measure that exploded in their faces like a Luther Campbell facial once they realized people will automatically defy the norm and acquire anything they are told they cannot have (the “banned” album moved 2 million copies)

This week Dem Vinyl Boyz are back with another classic “‘The Dark Side of the Moon’" . Revered as one of the greatest rock albums of all time, “Dark Side” — which tackles weighty themes of greed, conflict, religion, mortality and mental illness — was first released in the U.S. March 17, 1973. Despite only reaching the No. 1 spot for one solitary week, the album continues to hold the record for the most weeks charted on the Billboard 200 (over 800 weeks!) and was a constant feature on the Billboard 200 from its initial release until 1988 – returning to the chart in late 2009 after Billboard revised its chart eligibility rules regarding older releases. It is estimated to have sold over 45 million copies worldwide, while its artistic legacy is arguably even greater. The Dark Side of the Moon is the eighth studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 1 March 1973 by Harvest Records. Primarily developed during live performances, the band premiered an early version of the suite several months before recording began. The record was conceived as an album that focused on the pressures faced by the band during their arduous lifestyle, and dealing with the apparent mental health problems suffered by former band member Syd Barrett, who departed the group in 1968. New material was recorded in two sessions in 1972 and 1973 at EMI Studios (now Abbey Road Studios) in London.

This week's 12" inch piece of vinyl shows Slim Shady sitting on the porch of the home in which he lived as a teenager. The album sleeve visuals are in black and white but the sounds touch on different colors and sexual orientations. The Marshall Mathers LP is the third studio album by American rapper Eminem, released on May 23, 2000, by Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. The album was produced mostly by Dr. Dre and Eminem, along with The 45 King, the Bass Brothers, and Mel-Man. Recorded over a two-month period in several studios around Detroit, the album features more introspective lyricism, including Eminem's thoughts on his rise from rags to riches, the criticism of his music, and his estrangement from his family and wife.  Next week tune in to hear Pink Floyd's Dark Side of Moon. Dem Vinyl Boyz going CRAZY for Prince (aka the symbol) and his legendary album from 1984. Purple Rain is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Prince, released on June 25, 1984, by Warner Bros. Records and the soundtrack to the 1984 film of the same name. Purple Rain was musically denser than Prince's previous albums, emphasizing full band performances, and multiple layers of guitars, keyboards, electronic synthesizer effects, drum machines, and other instruments. Much of the album had a grandiose, synthesized, and psychedelic sheen to the production and performances. The music on Purple Rain is generally regarded as the most pop-oriented of Prince's career, though a number of elements point towards the more experimental records Prince would release after Purple Rain. The music video for the album's lead single "When Doves Cry" sparked controversy among network executives, who thought its sexual nature was too explicit for television. The risqué lyrics of "Darling Nikki" raised complaints from Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center and contributed to the implementation of Parental Advisory stickers and imprints on album covers. Prince designed Purple Rain as the project that would make him a superstar, and, surprisingly, that is exactly what happened. Simultaneously more focused and ambitious than any of his previous records, Purple Rain finds Prince consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and heavy metal with nine superbly crafted songs. Even its best-known songs don't tread conventional territory: the bass-less "When Doves Cry" is an eerie, spare neo-psychedelic masterpiece; "Let's Go Crazy" is a furious blend of metallic guitars, Stonesy riffs, and a hard funk backbeat; the anthemic title track is a majestic ballad filled with brilliant guitar flourishes. Although Prince's songwriting is at a peak, the presence of the Revolution pulls the music into sharper focus, giving it a tougher, more aggressive edge. And, with the guidance of Wendy and Lisa, Prince pushed heavily into psychedelia, adding swirling strings to the dreamy "Take Me With U" and the hard rock of "Baby I'm a Star." Even with all of his new, but uncompromising, forays into pop, Prince hasn't abandoned funk, and the robotic jam of "Computer Blue" and the menacing grind of "Darling Nikki" are among his finest songs. Taken together, all of the stylistic experiments add up to a stunning statement of purpose that remains one of the most exciting rock & roll albums ever recorded. Enjoy this week's episode. This week The Vinyl Boyz celebrate one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Metallica's Black Album. Metallica is the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. Released on August 12, 1991, by Elektra Records, it is commonly referred to as The Black Album because of its packaging design. Its recording took place at One on One Studios in Los Angeles over an eight-month span that frequently found Metallica at odds with their new producer Bob Rock. The album marked a change in the band's music from the thrash metal style of their previous four albums to a slower, heavier, and more refined sound. Metallica promoted Metallica with a series of tours. They also released five singles to promote the album: "Enter Sandman", "The Unforgiven", "Nothing Else Matters", "Wherever I May Roam", and "Sad but True", all of which have been considered to be among the band's best-known songs. The song "Don't Tread on Me" was also issued to rock radio shortly after the album's release but did not receive a commercial single release.

This week the Vinyl Boyz drop the needle on the 90s classic hip-hop record from A Tribe Called Quest titled Midnight Marauders. Released on November 9, 1993, by Jive Records. John “Q-Tip” Davis a.k.a. Kamaal Fareed, Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor, and Ali Shaheed Muhammed had already earned the adoration of dedicated hip-hop heads and fans of other genres with their previous projects. But with Midnight Marauders, they cemented their legend. Tribe were in a difficult position when working to put together Midnight Marauders: how do you follow up literally one of the best hip-hop albums of all time? Following their debut People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths Of Rhythm (1990), their sophomore LP The Low End Theory (1991) showcased the group’s vastly improved production chops and rhyming abilities. With their second album, they created perfect music to chill and vibe out to. It was a masterful artistic achievement. This album we reviewed this week is ranked in the top 5 of all time when discussing the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. Commercially, Midnight Marauders is the A Tribe Called Quest’s highest selling album. The album sold over 1,000,000 copies within it’s first year, making it a platinum hit. It also peaked #70 on the UK album charts, #8 on the Billboard 200, and took the top spot Top R&B/Hip Hop chart. A lot of the album’s success is due to its timeless classic of a single “Award Tour” which peaked at #47 on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s influence has spanned decades with the track being referenced by the likes of Wale, Kanye West, Common, Azealia Banks, and Justin Timberlake. Recording sessions for the album occurred at Battery Studios, Platinum Island Studios and Scorcerer Sound in New York City. Its production was mainly handled by Q-Tip, with contributions from Skeff Anselm, Large Professor and the group's DJ, Ali Shaheed Muhammad. A culmination of the group's two previous albums, it features an eclectic, gritty sound based on jazz, funk, soul and R&B samples, in addition to socially conscious, positively-minded, and humorous lyrics.
